Karate

Karate-do, loosely translated as "the way of the empty hand", is a Japanese martial art.  The origins of karate can be traced back thousands of years to China.  Martial artists in Okinawa developed Chinese fighting techniques into a unique system of self-defense. In the early twentieth century, a Karate master by the name of Gichin Funakoshi introduced Okinawan Karate to Japan, and subsequently to the world.

Karate is an effective means of self-defense. It is also an athletic activity that strengthens all parts of the body, increasing cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength as well as balance and agility. Master Funakoshi said that martial arts begins and ends with courtesy.  The study of martial arts fosters courtesy, integrity, humility and self-control.  The mental and spiritual aspects of martial arts study form a complement to the development of a student's physical well-being.

Shotokan Karate features punching, striking, kicking and blocking techniques for effective self-defense. These techniques are taught in a carefully-supervised class environment.  Instructors use a progressive training system to demonstrate and teach correct physical and psychological principles.
